Moscow 2013 mascot unveiled
Moscow 2013 LOC introduced to the public the event’s mascot – a sparrow – at today’s press-conference
The LOC organized an open contest to chose the mascot . There were more than 200 applications from all over the country. The image of the sparrow was selected by the professional jury among the leaders of the public Internet-voting. The winner of the contest is a young lady from Moscow.
ARAF General Secretary and LOC CEO Mikhail Butov noted that the sparrow is a common urban bird. “I think it brings up associations with our city and with athletics. IAAF liked our smart and cheerful sparrow , and we see that the journalists that came to this press-conference also sympathize with our mascot. And this sparrow not only jumps, it can also hurdle and throw”, Butov said. He also noted that the Moscow 2013 delegation felt keen interest for the event from the coaches, athletes, journalists and officials during the IAAF Centenary celebrations in Barcelona. Russian fans of athletics will have a chance feel the world’s attention to Moscow on February 3rd, when top international athletes arrive to take part in the IAAF Indoor Permit “Russian Winter” meeting. The renewed Luzhniki arena will host its first event on June 11th, it will be the IAAF World Challenge “Moscow Challenge” meeting. In July the Russian Championships will be held in Luzhniki as well.
The head of the Moscow Sports Committee Aleksey Vorobyev said that 90% of IAAF’s recommendations have been already implemented. The track at the Luzhniki Big Sports Arena, South and North Sports Arenas had been renovated. The renovation of the Sportgorodok Arena as well as the creation of additional fields for throwing and the replacement of the artificial grass by the natural one at the Big Sports Arena are scheduled for the next year.
The director of the LOC Aleksandr Polinsky announced that the individual sales of the tickets are scheduled to begin on March 1st, while currently there are the ticket packages on offer. For every competition session there will be 33315 tickets available. The global advertising campaign will start in the beginning of 2013.
